Afghanistan: Seven people killed in crowd near Kabul airport as Taliban seeks clarity on foreign forces exit

Seven people were killed in the pandemonium at Kabul airport as people fled the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, raising the total number of persons slain in the last week to 20.

“Conditions on the ground remain extremely hard,” the Ministry of Defense stated in a statement on Sunday, “but we are doing everything we can to manage the situation as safely and securely as possible.”

“Our deepest condolences are with the families of the seven Afghan citizens who have regrettably died in crowds in Kabul,” it continued, referring to those who died on Saturday.

After sweeping to power in Kabul last week, the Taliban stated on Sunday that it was seeking “full” clarity on the withdrawal of foreign soldiers and recognized that “handling unrest outside Kabul airport” was a “difficult challenge.”

On Saturday, Sky News observed as UK paratroopers began removing individuals from the chaos, before doctors checked vital signs and wrapped bodies in white blankets.

After a congestion on the outskirts of the airport, Sky Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay reported he observed at least three dead. In the previous seven days, 20 people have killed in or around Kabul airport, according to a NATO official.

British military have been stationed inside the airport, seeking to assist British citizens and Afghans with visas to enter the UK.
