Violence on 4 July: 100 people shot, including 11 children, and 18 died Chicago

The weekend in Chicago was rocked by violence; it is considered to be the worst of 2021 so far.

According to evidence revealed Tuesday, at least 100 individuals were shot in Chicago over the long holiday weekend, including 11 children and a police commander, and 18 were killed.

The Chicago Police Department (CPD) reported 69 shootings between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday, with 100 persons injured. According to authorities, the 18 murder victims were between the ages of 19 and 46 and included at least one individual who was fatally stabbed. Meanwhile, several of the victims of the shooting were children as young as 5 and 6.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, it was the city’s bloodiest weekend of 2021 thus far.

On Friday evening and into the night, eight shootings were reported, the first at 6:30 p.m. local time. Two 20-year-old men were in a car stopped at a red light when “an unknown offender approached the vehicle on foot and began firing at the victims,” according to police.

One of the victims was shot five times in the torso and back and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The second victim was shot in the leg but was expected to make a full recovery. Before the clock struck midnight, at least two more murders were reported.

On Saturday, there were at least 12 shootings reported, including five murders. On Sunday, twenty more were reported, two of which resulted in fatalities.

A 46-year-old woman was located inside a South Homan Avenue residence early Sunday with “several lacerations to the torso,” according to police. Police are investigating after she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A 5-year-old child was wounded in the right leg in an alley near South Normal Avenue around 4:40 p.m. that same day, according to police. The toddler was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Separately, a 27-year-old guy was riding a jet ski with a lady, 25, as a passenger at 4:30 p.m. Sunday when he was t-boned by a different jet ski driven by a 53-year-old male. According to officials, the 27-year-old received injuries throughout his body and was unable to be saved.

At least 27 shootings were recorded on Monday, with five persons killed.

In only one of Monday’s shootings, six persons were injured. Two males, aged 13, 21, and 26, and three females, ages 12, 29, and 34, were shot in a drive-by shooting that occurred shortly after 1 a.m., according to police. The men, aged 21 and 26, were unable to be saved, while the 12-year-old child was critically injured.

Around 1:30 a.m., cops were attempting to disperse a “big group” on North Long Avenue when someone shot at both the officers and the crowd, according to officials. A police commander was shot in the foot, while a sergeant was hit in the leg with a grazing wound.

Both were transferred to a local hospital and were found to be in fair health. The shooter is still on the loose, according to police.

During the holiday weekend, police recovered 244 illicit firearms and made 86 gun arrests.

According to authorities, 1,613 shootings had been registered so far this year, with 2020 victims. There have been 363 homicides so far.

To date, 194 children have been shot, with 25 of them being killed.
