Roger Federer will have knee surgery after damaging it during the grasscourt season, and he will miss the U.S. Open since the recovery procedure will keep him out of the sport for several months, he announced on Sunday.
Doctors advised the 40-year-old Swiss that he would require surgery to feel better, according to a video he posted to his Instagram account.
Federer stated, “I’ll be on crutches for many weeks and out of the game for many months.”
“It will be challenging in some ways, but I know it is the correct thing to do because I want to stay healthy and be able to run around afterwards.”
Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam singles champion, underwent two knee operations in 2020, requiring more than a year of recuperation. He returned to action in March, 13 months after losing in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
Last month, despite winning his third-round match, he withdrew from the French Open to focus on the grasscourt season, where he attempted a record-extending eighth Wimbledon victory but was defeated in the quarter-finals by Hubert Hurkacz.
Federer withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics as well as a number of tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, which runs from August 30 to September 12.
“I’d like to give myself a glimmer of hope that I’ll be able to return to the tour in some way,” Federer said.
“Don’t get me wrong, I understand how difficult it is to do another surgery and try it at this age, but look, I want to be healthy, and I’ll go through the rehab process with the purpose of staying active, which I believe will benefit me during this long period of time.”
