Covid patients are in high demand

M Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital in Dinajpur is overflowing with Covid-19 patients on a daily basis. Around 200 people were occupying the hospital’s 130-bed Covid unit as of yesterday.

This affects more than just the inhabitants of Dinajpur because it is the sole specialized public medical facility for patients from four northern districts.

Officials said the hospital has 16 ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds and 11 HDU (High Dependency Unit) beds, all of which are now filled.

A central oxygen supply with a 10,000-litre capacity is also available at the facility.

At least 300 Covid patients are being treated across various hospitals in Dinajpur, according to Dr Abdul Kuddus, the district’s civil surgeon.

213 people have been admitted to Abdur Rahim Hospital, 42 to Dinajpur General Hospital, and 45 to the district’s upazila health complexes.

Because the Abdur Rahim Hospital is a government-run specialized hospital, it also treats critical patients from adjacent districts such as Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, and Nilphamari.

During several trips to the hospital this week, hospital officials appeared to be struggling to cope with the influx of patients.

“Covid patients from all across the region come here; with our limited capacity, it’s tough for us to accommodate them,” a staffer explained.

While patients and their attendants are suffering greatly as a result of the lack of capacity, many have also complained about mismanagement.

Mohammad Joy, a resident of Dinajpur town, claimed he took his father to the hospital after he began having respiratory problems.

“After two days of trying, my father was able to get a bed. After another day, we received his RT-PCR test results “he stated

It’s worth noting that there are no Covid-related tests performed in the hospital.

According to Dr Abdul Kuddus, the district’s civil surgeon, at least 300 Covid patients are being treated in Dinajpur’s several facilities.

Hospital authorities appeared to be struggling to cope with the rush of patients during multiple visits to the hospital this week.

“We have to acquire all the recommended medicines from drugstores since they [the hospital] don’t have enough,” said Sahidnur Rahman, a patient’s attendant.

The charges were rejected by Dr. Aktar Kamal, the head of the hospital’s Covid unit. He stated that they are doing their best to treat Covid patients during a crisis while dealing with severe resource constraints.

When contacted, the hospital’s director, Dr Shamim Ara Najnin, echoed his assertions.

She also stated that they had submitted a request to the health ministry for the essential medications. She hoped they would have them as quickly as possible.

Around 1,600 patients have been hospitalized to the hospital since March of last year. Around 200 of them have perished, and 1,300 have been recovered.
